Mobile mapping solutions for rail

Facing a very short timeframe of only a few weeks, Grunder Ingenieure AG team knew it needed a fast and efficient method to safely and efficiently capture the entire infrastructure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel – one of the world’s longest tunnels.
With the combination of imaging and scanning data of mobile sensor platforms, all visual information is brought to reality. The Swiss engineering firm specialising in rail surveys choose the Leica Pegasus:Two for this historical project.
The vehicle-independent mobile mapping solution merges surveying technology, such as positioning systems, laser scanning and radar imagining, into one convenient and easy-to-use platform. A complete and fluid workflow follows reality capture to post-processing, feature extraction and GIS storage.
Laser scanning and survey tools for rail
Laser scanning allows to capture rail track environments. Paired with traditional survey tools, such as GIS asset collectors, total stations and antennas, engineers can work with the most accurate and current representations.

Combined with Leica Captivate solutions, the rail project deliverables allowed the design team and surveyors to proactively manage and transmit decisions based on immediate feedback. The open tracks were presented in 2D and 3D to provide the blueprint for a plan that will ultimately declutter historical track alignments, making the Brighton Mainline suitable for rail expansion into 2020 and beyond.
